Benefactor DonnaML Posted June 28, 2022 · Benefactor Benefactor Share Posted June 28, 2022 (edited) I am somewhat confused. I thought that next was a Provincial coin of Severus Alexander. See @Prieure de Sion's post directly above @Alegandron's. Here's one that meets his request: Severus Alexander, AE 22, AD 218-222, Mysia, Parion. Obv. Laureate bust right, wearing cuirass with Gorgoneion, seen from front, IMP CAEƧ L ƧEP ƧEV ALEXANDER (all S retrograde) / Rev. Asklepios seated right on throne, with right hand extended, holding and examining raised right fore-hoof of bovid (bull or cow) standing left with head raised towards his face, DEO AE ƧVB above, C G H I P [Colonia Gemella Hadriana Iulia Pariana] in exergue.* RPC VI Online 3871 (temp.) (see https://rpc.ashmus.ox.ac.uk/coins/6/3871). 20.03 mm., 4.24 g. Purchased from Lodge Antiquities, UK, Jan. 2022. *According to RPC VI 3871, the (blundered) reverse legend “is presumably an attempt at DEO AESCVLAP.” But see https://www.forumancientcoins.com/catalog/roman-and-greek-coins.asp?param=85231q00.jpg&vpar=1901&zpg=91146&fld=, stating that DEO AE ƧVB stands for “Deo Aesculapius subvenienti - to Aesculapius, the god who helps.” Next, another bovid. Nude or clothed; doesn't matter -- I'm not picky. Edited June 28, 2022 by DonnaML

JayAg47 Posted June 28, 2022 · Member Share Posted June 28, 2022 (edited) Banas of Madurai, they were a tiny feudatory who payed tributes under the Cholas and Pandyas, but became independent when Pandyas declined in power in the 14th century. I never knew this kingdom existed until I came across this coin featuring running Garuda (half eagle/half human), and the name Samara-Kolakalan in Tamil on the obverse. This quote from Wikipedia: "An ancient Tamil poem of the Sangam period, describes a scene in front of a Vanar (Banas) Palace as below: Poets are leaving the palace with plenty of gifts from the King, while the arrested rulers of smaller regions of the Kingdom, who have failed to pay tribute to the King and waiting for the King's pardon happen to see the poets leaving with expensive gifts which are actually things seized by the King from them. One of them, seeing the gifts, says that it is his horse that one the poet takes away, while another one points out to his elephant, similarly and so on goes the poem, capturing the might of ancient Vanars". Next, same theme- another obscure/generally unknown kingdom or issuer unknown to you prior to collecting. TuckHard Posted June 28, 2022 · Member Share Posted June 28, 2022 Here is a failed kingdom-state from a failed rebel leader along with his failed rebel grandson. Essentially he was a military leader during the Ming Dynasty and allowed and assisted the neighboring Manchu people of Manchuria to invade and capture parts of China, eventually leading to the complete collapse of the Ming Court and the start of a quarter millennium of Manchu rule over China by the Qing Dynasty. He later tried to rebel against the Qing Court, making him a double-traitor- a pretty unique title. Here's an excerpt from Wikipedia which can explain better than I can. Quote "Wu Sangui was a notorious Ming Dynasty military officer who played a key role in the fall of the Ming dynasty and the founding of the Qing dynasty in China. In 1644, after learning of the death of his father, the Ming general Wu Xiang in Beijing, Wu Sangui turned to the Manchu invaders (the Later Jin) and offered up the gate of Shanhaiguan, allowing the Manchurians to enter China and establish the Qing dynasty in Beijing. For his aid, the Qing rulers awarded him a fiefdom consisting of Yunnan and Guizhou provinces, and the royal title "Prince Who Pacifies the West". In 1674, Wu decided to rebel against the Qing. In 1678, Wu declared himself the new Emperor of China and the ruler of Zhou (大周), only to die within months. For a time, his grandson Wu Shifan succeeded him. However, the Kangxi Emperor of the Qing Dynasty eventually quelled the revolt. In Chinese folklore, Wu Sangui is viewed as a rebel who double-crossed both of his masters, the Ming and the Qing dynasties."
