The inscription reads: IMP CAE L SEP SEV PERT AVG COS II for Imperator Caesar Lucius Septimius Severus Pertinax Augustus, Consul Secundum; Reverse: Seven stars above a crescent. A wheel is pictured under the seat. The inscription reads: SAECVL FELICIT for Saeculi Felicitas (Age of good fortune). Interesting, the "F" in the reverse legend shows below l. a "hook", which is also found on denarii of Pescennius Niger (see Buttrey, NC 1992, p. xx). The die cutter of the present piece had obviously already cut dies for Pescennius Niger, either in Antioch or in a mobile mint. The same type had been minted and issued by Pescennius Niger (RIC IV Pescennius Niger 73) about a year earlier. With the victory 194 AD of Septimius Severus over his rival Pescennius Niger this denarius shows the change of rule.
