Roman Collector Posted June 18, 2022 · Patron Share Posted June 18, 2022 (edited) Antoninus Pius was one proud grampa!! Like a modern grandparent who is quick to show an i-phone full of photos of the grandkids, Antoninus Pius issued many coins to show off his grandchildren, such as these. Antoninus Pius, AD 138-161 Roman orichalcum sestertius; 22.64 gm, 31.5 mm, 12 h Rome, AD 149 Obv: ANTONINVS AVG PIVS P P TR P XII, laureate bust right, slight drapery on left shoulder Rev: TEMPORVM FELICITAS, COS IIII in exergue, S C across field, crossed cornucopiae from which a grape bunch flanked by two grain ears hang, surmounted by confronted busts of two children Refs: RIC 857; BMCRE 1827-29; Cohen 813; RCV 4236; Strack 1026; Banti 411. Obv: ANTONINVS AVG PIVS P P TR P XXIII, laureate head, right. Rev: PIETATI AVG COS IIII, Pietas, standing facing, head left, holding globe in extended right hand and child on left arm; on either side of her, small girl standing, raising one hand. Refs: RIC 1031; BMCRE 2088-90; Cohen 621; Strack 1192; RCV 4205. I have heard that grandparenthood is much more fun than parenthood. But I didn't have first hand experience to say whether or not this was true. Last night, RC NOB C and his wife had my wife and me, along with my daughter-in-law's parents over for Father's Day dinner. After dinner, they gave cards and gifts to me and RC NOB C's father-in-law. It was the best card and gift I had ever received!! I about fell out of my chair! So did RC NOB C's father-in-law! And a T-shirt which read ... So, sometime in February 2023, I'll be smiling so hard my face will crack and I'll be like Antoninus Pius showing off his first grandkid! Faustina Jr., Augusta AD 147-175. When they're little and you go to their house to visit, you (as the grandparent) get to fill them up with sugary drinks and snacks until they're bouncing off the walls, and then turn to your child (as the parent) and say, "Well, look at the time...I have to go home now"! 3 3

Benefactor DonnaML Posted June 19, 2022 · Benefactor Benefactor Share Posted June 19, 2022 Congratulations, @Roman Collector! What wonderful news. I would very much like to be a Grandma someday, but that remains to be seen. Here's Augustus with Gaius & Lucius: Antoninus Pius with daughter & assorted grandchildren: And Antoninus Pius with daughter and one grandchild, perhaps Lucilla (in role of Ceres & Proserpina): 6
