Who is going to NYINC 2024?

Another question: on the dealers' list, there's at least one whose name I don't recognize: "Ancient Coins" of New York, NY. A name that makes this dealer impossible to Google! Anyone ever heard of them?

This may be a stupid question, but I've always wondered whether there's any good reason to stop at the tables of any of the major auction houses that attend NYINC every year. (The only one not present this year is Roma, for obvious reasons.) Except for the few like CNG that also have fixed price lists (Leu and Nomos both came out with FPLs the day before NYINC began last year, but I've seen no signs of them this year), none seems to have coins out for sale.  I suppose it might be worthwhile to stop by if you want to say hello or discuss upcoming auctions or have coins to consign, but otherwise, why bother?

Nomos sent out an email saying they'd provide a FPL. Screenshot2024-01-10at11_17_02AM.png.e8212c97cf54e96e900f8afd09ad96cd.png

In general (though I haven't gone personally), some of the auction houses have inventory not listed online as well –– I've had friends who've gone sent me pictures of coins from Gorny and one of the nordic auction houses (I want to say Bruun, but i can't recall).

@DonnaML - I stopped by one of the majors last year (NAC) and was able to buy a nice example of a coin I’ve been looking for over several years. They had a handful of interesting coins for private sale.

Thanks. I imagine they'll provide it tomorrow morning, since that's when NYINC begins with the preview day. If it's anything like the one last year, the prices will be quite high -- although probably not as exorbitant as those on the one that Leu put out last year, or those on CNG's regular FPL.

Buy the pass online before Friday and it's $20 (save $5) and your pass will be waiting at checkin

Just did that!

At a big show like ANA I probably wouldn't as there's not enough time to see every table as it is. At a small show like NYINC I think there is some value in relationship building. Sometimes the best coins are offered privately. Also, if you are known quantity to an auction house the selling process may be more favorable someday. If none of that sounds useful, well sometimes they have candy at their table.

FYI, I'd suggest registering online or planning for extra time entering the show. They're requiring their own printed photo IDs which will mean that everyone entering the show needs to get their headshot taken and printed out. Very long lines are expected - I'll be at the Early Bird Preview tomorrow so we'll see just how bad it is. This is to deter crime after the unfortunate theft that happened at last year's NYINC.

Hopefully there won't be lines for those who've not only registered online but have already provided a headshot online to be placed on the photo ID. In such cases, the badge is supposed to be ready for pick-up.

That should indeed be a smooth and swift process (I picked mine up this morning before the auction in 30 seconds).

This year's Nomos FPL went online this morning, at https://nomosag.com/auction/fpl-16 . The coins look impressive to me, and although the prices are high I can't possibly judge whether they're in any way unreasonable:  out of the 82 lots, 70 are ancient Greek coins and 9 are Byzantine solidi, so they're well out of my area of knowledge regarding market values.

There's no sign of any Leu FPL this year.

They are in part at least extremely expensive with some generous descriptions of - say- finest available (whatever that means). I saw them in person a few minutes ago and while plenty are desirable they are often at nosebleed levels.

Eg a fairly ordinary Agathokles for 15000. I stupidly thought it was slightly cheap as I misread it as 1500. I had bought a similar one fairly recently for an eighth of the price.

Also some coins looked oddly familiar from very recent Nomos sales.

eg this they sold in November for 3k

8EBE0539-8D9A-4C11-8D4C-1593552031A1.jpeg.78c2d475f98d45ce665869e5ac172137.jpeg

And today sold for 8k as

82817D08-2841-4428-BA14-A08F40663579.jpeg.148bd8edabbd4d4dc409b66d25c0f3c1.jpeg

Looks rather like the same coin to me but it really was as clear as mud when I asked.

I had a wry smile smile at a couple of the prices of Tarentum ones but they sold, so more fool me!

I'll likely be there tomorrow (Friday)...late morning or early afternoon (not sure yet). If you see me, say hello. Badge should say something like Steve Moulding / rNumis

I'll probably post something tomorrow when I get there or am on my way, in case someone wants to say hi. Even apart from the fact that the photo on my ID will be the same as the one I use as my avatar, it shouldn't be too difficult to figure out who I am, given that there are usually more women there as dealers behind the tables than as customers in front. Which doesn't really bother me too much, because I simply don't think about it: I'm too busy looking at all those beautiful coins for sale!

I do have sort of a plan for which dealers to visit if I don't run out of time; I printed out the bourse map and wrote the names of the dealers who interest me next to their table numbers. I'm sure I won't be able to visit all of the ones I listed, because I tend to spend way more time than I should at each table looking at everything they have.

Empire Ballroom:

Ancients:

Herakles: Perry Siegel said he would hold back one coin that interests me so I can look at it, so it's only fair to him if I visit him first. Plus he always seems to have a rather wide selection of interesting coins at prices that aren't exorbitant. Like all the dealers I plan to visit whom I know from previous NYINCs.

Palmyra

Nick Economopoulos (one of the former Pegasi owners) and Keith Candiotti, sharing a table

HJB

CGB.fr, just to see what they have. I've never stopped by their table before at one of these events.

Medals:

Paul J. Bosco

CGB.fr if they brought any

World:

CGB.fr

Editions Gadoury, again to see what they have, plus to try to buy a current edition of their guidebook

to French coins.

HJB

Baldwin's

Maybe Louis Teller

Grand Ballroom:

Ancients:

Pars

Martina Dieterle

Medals:

William Goetz

Ingrid O'Neil (the specialist in Olympic materials)

World:

Allen G. Berman

Karl Stephens

Sovereign Rarities

Gallery:

Ancients:

Zuzim

Books:

Kolbe & Fanning (which seems to have replaced Charles Davis this year as the one major numismatic book dealer).

Any further suggestions are welcome, even though I already have more dealers listed than I can realistically visit in the one day I have. Although there are some there, who shall remain nameless, that I know are too rich for my blood!

@DonnaML @AncientJoe

A pleasure to meet both of you! Always nice to see the real person behind the avatar.

Good hunting!

You too, @rNumis (Steve)! I also had the pleasure of meeting and chatting with @Bailathacl  and @Humilau. As I mentioned, I'm apparently not difficult to find. It's nice indeed to be able to put a face to some of our members' mysterious user names!

At the end of the day, despite the ambitious list I posted, I had time to visit the tables of only five dealers for long enough to take a good look through their stock: Herakles Numismatics (Perry Siegel), Keith Candiotti, & Martina Dieterle for ancient coins, and Paul J. Bosco & William Goetz for medals.  I also said hello to a couple of people who were there from some of the auction houses where I've been a semi-regular customer, such as CNG and Nomos and Noonans. I was disappointed to learn that there wasn't a single numismatic book dealer present this year who actually brought books: Kolbe & Fanning brought nothing except promotional materials for their upcoming BCD Library auction.

I ended up making only five purchases: two Roman Imperial denarii (Vespasian and Diva Faustina I), two Roman Alexandrian tetradrachms (Nero and Divus Carus), and one French Napoleonic medal (the Battle of Lutzen). I will photograph them and write them up when I can. I also bought a copy from Gadoury of the 2023 edition of the annual guidebook they publish to French coinage from 1789. It looks very similar to the Spink guidebook for British coins -- lots of good color photos.  I wish I'd had more time, but I really don't think I'll be returning tomorrow or Sunday: I spent more than enough money today without going back to spend more!

Congrats! Looking forward to seeing your Vespasian!
