I live in a city, so I only rarely see scenery like this. akeady Posted June 10 · Supporter Share Posted June 10 I just got back from Rome 🙂 I had two free (ish - it cost me €42 return) return flights to use in Europe before 11th July, so went to Athens last month and Rome this month. Just for a long weekend - Friday to Monday. It's my eighth or ninth trip to Rome (one of my favourite places - there are treasures around every corner and it would take several lifetimes to see it all), so I tried to take in some different places: Basilica of San Clemente A complex structure - it was thought for a long time that the present basilica was the original structure, but excavations starting in the 19th century show that it's built on a 4th century basilica and uses part of the original marble. There's a mithraeum and earlier buildings from the Republican era underneath - even an underground stream. https://basilicasanclemente.com/eng/home-2/ San Pietro in Vincoli Trajan's Market Tivoli - Hadrian's Villa A subway and bus ride outside Rome, but well worth a visit - huge area, I was wilting after walking around for hours in the heat. Hadrian's Mausoleum (Castel Sant'Angelo) This had been on the bucket list for a long time - on my last visit, there was a queue outside, so I carried on to St. Peter's (and a bigger queue). European Athletics Championships! I didn't even realise these were on in Rome until last Thursday morning - I managed to see Ciara Mageean win the 1500m last night! Back to Basilica of San Clemente this morning - it turns out my cousin is based at the adjoining Dominican Monastery (I thought he was back in Ireland), and he gave me a short tour of some parts not yet open and pointed out some things I'd missed on Friday. Other than that, I ate great food and wandered around taking photos 😄 It was hot - back in Dublin this afternoon it was about 20 C cooler. Random selection of pictures. Marcus Aurelius on the Capitoline Hill (the original is in the adjoining museum) Forum by night. Tiber (coming back from dinner) Aurelian Wall - Porta San Giovanni. Hadrian's Mausoleum. Ramp inside the Mausoleum. Arch of Septimius Severus. Just after the 1500m. Trevi Fountain. Trajan's Market Gelato 😄 Pantheon. Teatro Maritimo of Hadrian's Villa. There appeared to be a person in light grey clothing walking down the driveway. But it was a misty, insubstantial figure. And then it faded out and completely disappeared before my eyes! Needless to say, I was a bit freaked out! 😱 I went outside for a look. There was no person walking down the driveway. But the sprinklers were on. Gradually, I figured out that what I had seen on the camera was a large plume of water from the lawn sprinkler, slowly moving along the curb. This plume was briefly reflected in the streetlights. On the blurry camera feed, in the semidarkness, it totally looked like a person walking! Trivia: the hotel is located very close to what local legend used to call "the most haunted place on Saint Simons Island". I don’t know much about Beanie Babies, but apparently that “Jake the Mallard Duck” is indeed a rare one. (?) There are some hilariously priced ones on Etsy (but then we all know about Etsy, right? 🙄) Here’s a Jake the Mallard for $20K. Makes that $600 one seem a bargain! 😂 Then again, there’s this, so… who knows. 🤷♂️ Maybe that one’s a later edition? The wild grapevine climbing up it is so old and established that the vine’s base is as big around as a tree in its own right. Some of these trees are as much as 900 years old.
