Valentinian Posted May 29 · Member Share Posted May 29 Reverse legends with two Gs in "AVGG" refer to two or more rulers. Some coins indicate three rulers with "AVGGG". This helps us date coins of Carus from Antioch. 20-19 mm. 3.06 grams. RIC 5.2, Carus 124 IMP C M AVR CARVS PF AVG VIRTVS AVGG (with two Gs). Carus promoted his elder son Carinus to Caesar in autumn 282 and about a month later made his younger son Numerian Caesar. After that his coins from Antioch (but not the other mints) had three Gs. So this coin is dated to the short period when Carinus was Caesar (Note: 2 Gs does not imply two Augusti, rather two rulers) and Numerian was not yet Caesar, that is, it is dated to autumn 282. I thought the importance for dating of AVG, AVGG, and AVGGG was interesting enough to make a web page on it: http://augustuscoins.com/ed/Carus/ If you have a coin of with one of those in the reverse legend you might find it interesting. Check it out. Show us coins of Carus, Carinus, or Numerian.

Orange Julius Posted May 30 · Member Share Posted May 30 A great coin @Valentinian! I have a similar coin attributed as RIC 5.2, Carus 124 from Antioch but have seen examples of the same coin type attributed also attributed to Siscia, so I actually have both mints in my notes. Anyone have any insight into why? Are there other references with different thinking on this type? Here’s mine… notice the sweet bald head: Carus AE antoninianus. Antioch mint. IMP C M AVR CARVS PF AVG, Radiate, draped, and cuirassed bust right. VIRTVS AVGG, Carus standing right, receiving Victory from Jupiter, Carinus or Numerian, standing left. A in lower centre, mintmark XXI. RIC 124; Sear 12188.
