A very interesting purchase...

Recommended Posts

Today I bought a very interesting artefact from fellow metal detectorist, and in my opinion this is an early depiction of St. George, X-XII century...I believe that the pilgrims to the Holy Land sewed this appliqué on their clothes...If anyone has any thoughts or additional information on this or a similar artefact, I would greatly appreciate it...

55 mm/2.16 inches and 20grams...

A very engaging and, in light of the stylization, perceptive interpretation of the motif, @galba68.  Yes, including the chronological range.  Which is the only intelligent comment I could add.  But I hope you're right!

The Kunera database has images of some 340 medieval and early modern pilgrim badges depicting St. George. None is as close to yours als the link you posted, but many are iconographically comparable: https://database.kunera.nl/en (search for "George" in the database).

Also, see the Pilgerzeichen Datenbank (in German): https://www.pilgerzeichen.de/
