Dear coin friends,

the next part of my collection of Roman Bronzes will go on sale at Künker's next e-Auction starting July 22.

Here is the deal: Anyone of you who may win one of these coins from my collection please send me a PM and I will mail you a free copy of the detailed certificate of authenticity (including comprehensive information on the historical background to the issue and the precise significance of the particular variety) by David R. Sear.

So here is what is on offer:

A rare Sestertius of Pertinax (this coin listed in Lempereur, Pertinax 778 n):

Kunker is a great auction house but its photography on ancient coins is kind of underwhelming. Your Hadrian Moneta Sestertius looks much better in hand than on the catalogue

I suspect they used flashes when taking photos but it didn't work very well...especially on those silver coins

What stunned me most is that they put the following four of my Sestertii in a group lot:

1) A portrait Sestertius of TIBERIUS

(harder to find than those of ANY OTHER Roman Emperor - including Vitellius and Gordian I and II  !!!)

2) A rare Sestertius of MARINIANA, wife of Valerian:

3) A Sestertius of VOLUSIAN with a wonderful portrait and an interesting reverse (despite some tooling on the temple):

4) A Sestertius of  Severus Alexander with a beautiful early portrait:

The starting price of all four together is a mere 125 Euros 🥵, about half of what I paid for the Sear certificates alone (the four of which I will gladly mail the winner if he sends me a PM.

But the most regular bidders know that - the pictures are not the best, but when you get the coins, the condition looks better in the hand. Btw. thats better than a good picture and a bad coin in the hand 😄

Any particular reason you chose Künker this time instead of Leu?

I can only report from my own experience - I wouldn't sell anything in a normal Leu (web) auction either. You are competing with around 7000 other coins, which depresses the prices. Of course I will still buy from Leu - but I find the web auctions with too many coins to sell (often several of the same type at once).

Did they ask you beforehand? Was this agreed? Were you informed beforehand that this was possible? I had this problem with Leu - they simply put various coins that didn't match together into one lot without consulting me and sold them cheaply. Very annoying. I'm a "fan" of Kinkier - I would have thought that they wouldn't do this. I'm disappointed.

Thank you, Donna! Actually partly because you had troubles with Leu´s postal service, but mainly because Künker has a representative in Hamburg who comes to my place and picks up the coins in person, while I travelled all the way to Munich to meet the CEO of Leu and hand in my goods (but Mr. Gunzenreiner and team were also very nice to deal with I must say).

No. None of that.

It especially bothers me because someone had offered me 600 Euros for the Tiberius on Ebay and I declined 😬.

Maybe I should try to put in the highest bid myself to prevent a big loss but then I would have to pay both the buyers AND sellers commission myself 🥵
