Al Kowsky Posted July 4 · Member Share Posted July 4 15 hours ago, DonnaML said: What exactly do you guys use all those knives for? Or do you just display them like you would coins? Knives are really a "male thing" that mystify women. Sigmund Freud & Carl Jung both believed that subconsciously men equated knives & swords to the male penis 🤔. Like CPK, AETHER, & seth77, I have a few knives I really treasure, like a Cold Steel tanto similar to the one pictured below. My tanto is #0560, & cost me $600 at a gun show many years ago. The blade is made from san mai steel, with a core of hardened stainless steel & a wall of Damascus steel on each side. Each wall of Damascus steel is made from 160 layers of steel forged into a distinctive pattern. The handle is made from white ray skin & wrapped like a samurai sword. I also have a number of finely made knives made at the Seki Factory for Al Mar, before he passed away. 5 1
ewomack Posted July 5 · Supporter Share Posted July 5 A large chunk of my free time goes to reading. The last 10 books I've finished since April are: 1. Fallen TImbers 1794 by Winkler 2. Indian Buddhist Philosophy by Carpenter 3. A Clergyman's Daughter by Orwell 4. India: South Asian Paintings from the San Diego Museum of Art 5. Dialogues and Letters by Seneca 6. Nietzsche: A Philosophical Biography by Safranski 7. Danville by Merritt (a photo history of Danville, Kentucky) 8. The Little Book of Hindu Deities by Patel 9. Introduction to Classical Chinese Philosophy by Van Norden 10. War in Japan 1467 - 1615 by Turnbull Currently reading The Nothingness Beyond God: An Introduction to the Philosophy of Nishida Kitaro by Carter (Japanese Philosophy). I was a philosophy undergrad with a large interest in comparative philosophy, so I read all kinds of philosophy from all over the world. I decided to get a more "useful" Master's degree after briefly exploring a career in academia in philosophy. I think I made the right decision for me. As for knives, I only have a few small carving knives that I rarely used. It didn't take long for me to realize that there wasn't a budding wood carver inside me struggling to get out. I did, however, learn that most injuries from knives come from people dropping them on themselves. I almost learned that the hard way.
CPK Posted July 5 · Supporter Share Posted July 5 Speaking of reading, I just finished D.G. Kousoulas's biography The Life and Times of Constantine the Great: the First Christian Emperor. I enjoyed it. It was intentionally written more in the style of a novel, which made it easier and more engaging to read, without sacrificing scholarship. To quote from the preface, "'The traditional approach to writing history and biography is to tell about what happened, rather than to describe what actually did happen, as a novelist might - in effect to tell a story.' Moving away from the traditional approach in order "to tell a story" has been my guiding principle." Also, I thought he was very fair in his treatment of Constantine, which isn't something you can say for many of Constantine biographers, ancient or modern. A good read overall. If anyone has any other suggestions for more books about Constantine I'd be happy to hear them. I also recently finished re-reading the entire 5-volume Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy series. 😄 They are some of my favorite books. The humor is so weird, random, and off-the-wall but somehow so relatable. Makes me laugh every time I read them! 😆 Now that I am done with the above books I think I will begin reading Anthony Everitt's biography of Cicero which has been sitting on my shelf for a while. 5

CPK Posted July 7 · Supporter Share Posted July 7 Harking back to knives/bladed tools, the other evening I had an opportunity to use my favorite axe in preparation of a campfire supper - a Gransfors Bruk Scandinavian Forest axe, a Christmas gift from my wife. 🙂 It is by far the finest axe I've ever used, razor sharp, thin head geometry which allows it to bite very deep into wood. A pleasure to use! Here is a picture I took a couple years ago when we were in Wisconsin for Christmas - a crackling campfire in the cold snowy woods, with said axe and another favorite knife, a CRK Large Sebenza 21: 3

Nerosmyfavorite68 Posted July 21 · Member Share Posted July 21 (edited) That looks very rustic and peaceful. My current status is less exciting; I just made beef burgundy stew and I'm eating a portion for lunch, with some iced tea. Tonight I'll have a glass of spiced wine. 1 1/2 cups of wine went into the stew. The remainder is for drinking. I'm glad I didn't choose Taco Hell. 980mg of salt and 29g of fat, for 3 tacos. Salomons Cat Posted July 21 · Member Share Posted July 21 What I'm up to: Writing my doctoral thesis in medicine, about immunology. By the way, this is not equal to an MD from the US, which is a professional degree. I think that there, it might be called a PhD. I did 3 years of research in a laboratory and will soon try to submit 1 or 2 papers for publication. I really must do more sports. During the past year, I worked at an emergency station at a big university hospital with nonstop nightshifts and no lunch breaks. During my shifts, I ate mainly sweets from a vending machine. I think that I got sarcopenic and my body posture became worse. I stopped working there recently and I'll start with a specialisation in rheumatology soon 😊 I have to do more sports. I already took a Salsa dancing intensive course this weekend, 3 hours per day. And I'm going to start rowing with a water rowing machine at home right now 🙂 4

No pictures, but I just got back from a 20 mile bike ride. Trying to prep for a 100k ride my brothers and I are planning later this year. 1
