Canada's Money Collector Show / RCNA Annual Convention: a Li’l report

Recommended Posts

After reading the post by @Dafydd about the FUN in Florida, I thought it would be interesting to talk about an exposition I attended last weekend.

The highlight of the Canadian numismatic year is the RCNA Annual Convention. This year it was presented on the Montreal south shore, only 20 minutes from where I live ! Since 1954 it has been held yearly in various cities across Canada.

The RCNA Annual Convention is Canada's oldest numismatic event offering collectors an opportunity to meet and develop life long friendships and share numismatic knowledge.

A large and diverse inventory of coins, tokens, medals, banknotes and numismatic literature is available on the bourse floor from Canadian and American dealers.

An auction at every Convention provides collectors an opportunity to build their collection and a basis for determining current values of all types of numismatic material.

Educational forums are presented during the course of the convention that feature original presentations on a variety of numismatic topics.

There were 30 exhibit tables, 70 dealers (7 offering ancient coins) from all around Canada. I had the pleasure of meeting Mitch Goudreau from the Edmonton coins club, one of Terence Cheesman’s best friend who generously shared with me numismatic anecdotes about our missed dear member. We talked a lot about the sale of his collection 2 months ago, and also about a trip they made together in Europe 10 years ago, visiting dealers and coin shows there.

All the dealers were willing  to discuss the evolution of the ancient coin market, and some of them even brought parts of their personal collection, and I was particularly amazed by a dozen of super high graded Sestertii with breathtaking patinas (Balbinus, Pupienus, Gordy 1 & 2…).

So here are some pictures I took:

Lawrence Curry, from Upstart Coins in Nova Scotia. First time I met him, really nice guy who told me how he got in contact with coins when he was only a kid…

Louis Brousseau, from Numismatique LB, who obtained a PhD in Numismatics in Paris and worked for the Cabinet Des Médailles in the Greek coins department. He also has a store on VCoins.

Here we have Charles Euston and Mikael Saulnier. Mikael (left) is the first seller from whom I acquired coins, and the one who made me addicted to coins. Charles for his part, the most recognized specialist in Gallienus SPQR coins, is the collector who knows numismatists all over the planet! He welcomed me into his home a few months ago, and shared with me part of his collection and especially these famous medallions...

Clément Chapados-Girard, from Jetons Canada, a very friendly numismatist who always have many very nice specimens in his inventory.

And we can always count on Svetolik Kovacevic, from Ancient Numismatic Entreprise (he’s on VCoins), to make our eyes widen with an incredible selection of very high quality gold pieces and coins...and beyond my modest budget!
