Faustina Friday on Hiatus

Recommended Posts

I wrote the first installment of Faustina Friday on 24 July, 2020. I have written a total of 208 weekly installments of the series and have learned a lot in the process. But the time has come that I have quite literally run out of coins to talk about! Therefore, I am no longer able to write Faustina Friday as a weekly feature but will continue to write it on an ad hoc basis, as I acquire new coins or uncover new information.

I hope you've enjoyed my weekly column's four-year run. I look forward to future installments.

I shall close with this coin, which was the subject of this column's first installment, four years ago.

Is it April 1st?? 😮

Seriously, though, that is an incredible volume of good, solid, scholarly information - we are in your debt. Thanks and congratulations!

In celebration, here's my Faustina II coin:

FaustinaIIdenariusLaetitiav.2.jpg.c71b53e804d06af3ce160a928050dda9.jpg

FAUSTINA II, as Augusta under Antoninus Pius
AR Denarius (18.79mm, 3.12g, 7h)
Struck Dec. AD 147/8. Rome mint
Obverse: FAVSTINAE AVG PII AVG FIL, bare-headed and draped bust of Faustina II right, wearing Beckmann Type 1 hairstyle
Reverse: LAETITIAE PVBLICAE, Laetitia, draped, standing left, holding diadem in extended right hand and vertical sceptre in left
References: RIC III 506a, RCV 4705
Attractively toned with hints of iridescence. A particularly beautiful young portrait of Faustina, struck in high relief. This reverse type proclaiming joy to the public (LAETITIAE PVBLICAE) was struck to commemorate the birth of Faustina's first child, daughter Domitia Faustina, born late in AD 147.

That's a gorgeous coin. I'd love it even more without the toning but, damn, it's awesome just as is!

Certainly @Roman Collector you are a master of specialization always showing interesting pieces.

Imagine if there was a "Gordian Tuesday" or something like that.

I'll share this one below. Faustina the Elder.

AR Denarius, 20mm 3.1 grams

Obverse: DIVA FAVSTINA, draped bust right

Reverse: AETE-R-NITAS, Aeternitas, Providentia, or Urania standing front holding globe, veil blowing out around head.

Reference: RSC 32, RIC 351

@Roman Collector We are all highly indebted to you for your exceptional expertise and knowledge of these coins! Faustina Friday's have become a staple of my weekly reading and if even 1/10th of the knowledge stuck, I know I'm the better for it!

Just tossing this out as an idea, but given the number of new members we have had over the years, resurrecting your original threads as new threads on this site would be an idea I'm sure many of us (myself included) would support 🙂

Truly is the end of an era. I've learned so much from these posts. And often in areas that I wouldn't even have thought about.

It is both a shame and inevitable that it would come to an end. I hope that you compile the material and publish it.

So long, at least to this specific article series, and thanks for all the Faustinii!

Here's my favorite Faustina:

I've enjoyed reading your weekly installments for I can't even recall how long. That is quite a feat to have quite literally come to the end.
I think it's time to get out there and acquire more coins! 🙂
Looking forward to whatever you come up with next. Thanks for sharing!
