Green on silver...

There are two reasons for this. The copper salt deposits come from the coin itself, as is possibly the case with the Philipi here, or they come from neighbouring bronze coins.

In the latter case, with good silver, the coins can be easily cleaned with EDTA. The silver patina / toning  is usually preserved with this cleaning method. (see example)

In the case of billon, a rough surface sometimes remains after chemical cleaning.
