Extreme Coin Makeover - Treating Trajan

Recommended Posts

To be fair, I don't remember what this coin looked like before. I assume it was covered in some type of encrustation, which I soaked off with a high-concentration sodium hydroxide solution, my go-to for certain types of encrustation. Afterwards, there remained some rust, which I tried to treat with sodium thiosulfate. I then, as expected, got this rather dull and sad coin. The treatment revealed some some interesting crystallizations, but these were pretty chemically-induced and not that attractive.

Then, all it took was the tried and true Ren Wax method to get this coin looking a bit more up to speed.

I think the main benefit of the wax is not in how it makes things more "shiny," but rather how it evens out the color. It tends to darken light areas, lighten dark areas, and give a more uniform appearance. The purplish crystallizations still remain, but much less evident now.
