JayAg47 Posted August 18 · Member Share Posted August 18 This set is up for sale from a local dealer, their asking price is $11K AUD or $7.3K USD. Although I'm not interested in this nor the means, I wonder if you could put up such a set with similar coins for much less? What's your opinion? 5
Kali Posted August 18 · Member Share Posted August 18 A bit too much, considering Caligula and Claudius are both just their bronzes. They're nice examples of the type. Otho at least has his name on the coin. Nero denarius is well-centered, but the rest of the coins are average. You could do a set for much less.
CPK Posted August 18 · Supporter Share Posted August 18 Just doing a rough eyeball estimate at current retail pricing, trying to be generous here: JC Elephant: $1,000 Augustus: $400 Tiberius: $500 Nero: $400 Galba: $500 Otho: $1,000 Vitellius: $400 Vespasian: $250 Titus: $200 Domitian: $200 Caligula: $500 Claudius: $250 ...adds up to $5,600. With some patience and luck, you should be able to get that down significantly, maybe down to $4k or even less. IMO $7,300 is a bit much. 5 1
Benefactor DonnaML Posted August 18 · Benefactor Benefactor Share Posted August 18 Definitely not worth the price. I think even @CPK's estimate is very high given the mediocre condition of most of them. Including the Caligula bronze. 6 1
El Cazador Posted August 18 · Member Share Posted August 18 (edited) I would say for the quality of the material: $3,500-4,000 Edited August 18 by El Cazador
Heliodromus Posted August 18 · Member Share Posted August 18 Seems a bit of a strange concept in the first place ... isn't collecting about, well, collecting - the thrill of the hunt ,etc. Who wants to buy a pre-formed collection, unless it's a dealer buying at wholesale to break it up? Oh well, each to their own. 8

John Conduitt Posted August 18 · Supporter Share Posted August 18 CPK's prices are mostly right at full retail on VCoins. Perhaps a little high for Otho onwards but even at half those prices $4,000 would be a fair price. That wouldn't be the point of buying a set, though. You'd want less than $4,000 for buying 12 coins. 4
Amarmur Posted August 18 · Member Share Posted August 18 My estimate of what they would go for close to CPK but i'm less experienced lol Caesar Elephant: $750 Augustus: $200 Tiberius: $350 Nero: $200 Galba: $250 Otho: $400 Vitellius: $250 Vespasian: $70 Titus: $100 Domitian: $70 Caligula: $300 Claudius: $150 These are what collectors are willing to pay for the most part. I'm not 100% on the ballpark but yeah it sounds like a bad deal
Romismatist Posted August 19 · Member Share Posted August 19 I would echo @Amarmur's estimate is what collectors would look to build this collection at, which is just a little over $3k, so less than half of what the dealer is looking for. For the most part I would agree with these values as "street estimates". That's probably what the dealer put it together for, or what he offered whoever sold the set to him. He's obviously looking to make money out of the deal too. I also agree with those who question the point of buying a pre-formed set. The thrill is in the hunt, and as I am in the process of pulling this set together, I'm looking for coins that are better than fine or almost VF condition. At least you could definitely do better on the Titus.
Amarmur Posted August 19 · Member Share Posted August 19 (edited) my complete 12 Caesars set Julius elephant 150 Augustus 220 Tiberius 200 Caligula 130 Claudius 100 Nero 50 Galba 80 Otho 380 Vitellius 110 Vespasian 85 Titus 88 Domitian 50 I spent roughly $1,643 on my 12 Caesars set. I bargain hunted a lot and got flat out lucky for the Nero at a flea market. I am pretty happy with the quality of most of them besides Caesar himself (but it's okay for 150) and Vitellius and Galba but I don't plan to upgrade them because I don't find them terribly interesting, and they have redeeming qualities besides being low grade like the circ cam look on Galba and the particularly plump Vitellius. 7k is insane, I still think I could have done it for way under a thousand if I went provincial. CPK Posted August 19 · Supporter Share Posted August 19 (edited) I am missing Otho and Vitellius (and since I am not necessarily trying to put together a "12 Caesars" set, who knows when I will get them.) These are my nicest examples for each emperor. Total cost is, I think, around $4.5k. Yikes. 😬 Edited August 19 by CPK 11
Herodotus Posted August 19 · Member Share Posted August 19 W/ the exception of the Julius Caesar, TIberius, and Otho... I don't see a coin there worth more than $200(USD). Roughly $2000(USD) for the group @Auction IYAM. Perhaps a bit more if sold individually. Even at upper-end retail(marked up at 100%), that still puts it around 4K(USD). So, at that asking price, your local dealer may be sitting for a bit on that set.

A lot of people here may be remembering when coins were not as expensive, but on average I would say CPK's estimate is very close. I've sold three JC Denarii in the lst few months for $1,500 (only a little better than the one illustrated). A lot of things have gone crazy.
Finn235 Posted August 19 · Member Share Posted August 19 Mine cost just shy of $3k by my reckoning: Caesar: $300 (lot find) Augustus: $250 Tiberius: $100 Caligula: $200 (lot find) Claudius: $900 Nero: $150 Galba: $150 (lot find) Otho: $250 Vitellius: $180 Vespasian: $50 Titus: $100 Domitian: $80 Obviously I've cut a lot of corners with provincial coins, 2017-2019 prices don't hold much water in 2024, and there's a lot of luck involved, but I'm still convinced that a "nice" 12 Caesars in mixed denominations is still possible on a $4k budget in 2024. 6
Benefactor Ancient Coin Hunter Posted August 19 · Benefactor Benefactor Share Posted August 19 My 12 is going to be around $4500. The only dudes I don't have are Otho and Vitellius. I got an underwater Galba tet of Alexandria for $250. So I may go that route again for Vitellius. I think Mr toupee Otho will be a denarius.
