When I'm broke (not broke-broke, only mid-broke), since like everybody here I need my fix of coin quite regularily, I tend to hunt for a cheap, yet nice, Gordian III coin to feel the touch and emotion of a new coin in my hand. I must have been on the low quite some times lately as I added two more, and while cataloguing them, discovered they must have had babies ... there are now two dozens of roaches crawling around. The two "new born" And the family re-united for a group shot Does it happen to you to realize all of a sudden a collection (a sub set at minimum) has grown on its own, without you knowing, or even noticing what was happening ? Let's be honest, there is no shame or embarrassment collecting the coinage of this boy emperor 😉. His coinage is for the most part, plentiful, well engraved, historically important, & not that expensive ☺️. The two Byzantine hexagrams in the top row are too few to qualify as a subcollection. The four Anglo-Saxon sceats? Despite spending some serious money on relevant reference books, I will only dignify these coins with the status of a subcollection if I manage to afford at least a few more. The Carolingian deniers? Definitely a subcollection. I have the reference books. The coins are not casually, but carefully selected. I am deliberately gaining additional coins, perusing auctions and dealer websites. A non-trivial amount of my collecting budget over the past two years has been spent on these coins. Plus, there are a few more coins which are not included in this group photo. My subcollections began unintentionally, with the acquisition of a coin which was not a carefully considered purchase. I primarily deal with large lots, and have a tendency to keep any coins that catch my fancy and/or I don't think will sell for more than I would be willing to buy them for. This led to me accidentally making a collection of several LRB sets; the most impressive and "collection-like" being Constantine the Great. I have three Gordian III denarii, which I purchased more for the reverse imagery than for the emperor featured on the obverse.
