Alwin Posted September 8 · Member Share Posted September 8 Since we are in competition with the whole world, the equation is simple: either we agree to overpay for a coin, or we don't have the slightest chance of getting it. Regarding this auction, I was targeting two coin. I paid twice a "reasonable" price for the first, and I didn't get the second, because I only bet one and a half times a "reasonable" price (I won't develop the notion of "reasonable" price, it would take me too far). Since the madness caused by Covid, my annual number of purchases has been roughly divided by three.

I think you mean starting price 😉 Though with Leu, "x times the starting price" is pretty meaningless, even more so than "x times the estimate" at other auction houses. The coin I won went for 13x the starting price and I'm very pleased to have won it. My max was actually 20x the starting price. 2

I'm sure Leu has a wide audience, but I don't think it's quite the entire world. 🙂 It's certainly possible to not overpay, or even significantly underpay, for a coin at an auction. Unfortunately it seems that Leu is the sort of place where that rarely happens. I placed one small, timid bid on a coin of Trajan, only to be instantly crushed by a hammer price nearly 7x as large. Oh well, hadn't really expected to win!
