The email from Hell

Imagine if you will...

The Twilight Zone opening credits HD on Make a GIF

You receive an email. So far so good. You like emails. They give you a feeling of normalcy and that you have some small amount of power over this chaotic, pitiless, and unpredictable world. The header is from biddr. Again, a good thing. You like biddr and the access that it gives you to the ancients and spirits from the past.

And you have had your eye on and even put down a substantial bid on that extra gnarly coin that just may be the one to unlock the wicked primeval mysteries of the ancients. But then you read the infernal email...

Noooooo!!!

 Aaaand scene.

This is why you always bid live on coins that you NEED in your collection.

Anyways, happy spooky season and hell-come, hell-come to another addition of CTGBITN. I'll be scaring some of my favorite scary coins from the last year in hopes that you will reciprocate and share some of your spookie ookie metal cookies!

(No. Not those kind of metal cookies. Though they are pretty METAL)

Certainly there is something basic in all of us that both enjoys seeing the "good guy" Herakles bashing in the skull of Diomedes before feeding him to his own man-eating horses. But the savagery of it may also give some us us the jitters when thinking about if it was our head on the chopping block:

If that made you feel uncomfortable then here is another macabre scene of Herk preparing to smash the brains from all 3 heads of Geryon:

Oh, great! Now your coins have crabs! Talk about the ma-crab-re:

And then sometimes we get good coins...that turn bad.

One of my favorite portraits of late, is this one of the nymph Sinope. She's that little tease who out smarted Zeus. Hoping to win her favor, Zeus offered her anything she wanted and she replied that what she wanted was to remain a virgin. Sinope outsmarted Apollo in the same way. Too bad for her, no girl stays good forever:

Paphlagonia. Sinope circa 330-250 BC. Trihemiobol AR (9mm, 1,48 g) Head of Nymph Sinope facing slightly left / ΣΙΝΩ, sea eagle standing facing, wings spread, head turned left.

It was while holding her coin that I may have accidently misspoken when reading some Candarian incantations from the book of the dead...

And just like that she turned on me. Now I am living with an insane fly eating jokeresque bimbo instead of my foxy nymph. O the pain!

Speaking of ugly pretty ladies, not to be the guy who calls a beautiful successful woman that founded her own city a Witch, buuuuut here is a coin of Dido founding the city of Carthage. The same city that archeological finds have shown again and again sacrificed babies, usually very young infants.

Rouvier 2375–6. RPC VI 8613 (temporary). Very Rare and with a most interesting mythological scene on the reverse. Well centered and with nice details. Nearly very fine.

So, I wont be the one to call such a self made woman a witch. I'll let Monty Python do it for me:

Yes I know, that's what prompted me to go to the window scene from the 1979 adaptation lol. I will certainly watch the new one over the weekend. I like it a lot that they made a period piece rather than transposing the story into the present day. Vampires are a lot less scary if they have a smartphone in their hand/claw.

Paper money and exonumia this year.

headless.jpg.69b141c0e5883c54ded16cea680d48df.jpg

Headless Horseman.  DeNG 1/2# 77.1.  1921 Notgeld from the city of Berga.  This is not exactly the horseman from the American "Sleepy Hollow" story.  That story was inspired by undead headless men from German folktails.  According to German Wikipedia, "In the Rhineland, the headless horsemen were ... suicides, whose bodies were beheaded by the executioner until the 17th century and buried at a crossroads or another unconsecrated place, often nailed underground with a long hawthorn stake... [or] ... were boundary stone movers who had enriched themselves from their neighbors' farmland."

oberammergau.jpg.e8ab15f7d9329165a207cfdfe0671146.jpg

Numista.  1921 Notgeld from Oberammergau.

A giant Grim Reaper is featured mowing the town with a scythe. The year printed on the banknote, 1634, is when the bubonic plague death rate finally went down in Oberammergau. The villagers vowed that if God spared them from the plague, they would produce a Passion Play every 10 years depicting the life and death of Jesus. The first Oberammergau Passion Play was performed in 1634 and it is still being performed in the present day, every 10 years, most recently in 2022.  Jesus on the cross is depicted on the note as well, below the Grim Reaper, referring to the Passion Play.

The note is #2 on Scariest Banknotes of All Time.

This one needs more research.  It's a big charm -- 43mm.  Modern, perhaps really modern.  The seller believes this charm depicts Taoist hungry ghosts.  I haven't been able to find another example.  The inscription is 宣統通寶 (Xuantong Tongbao), the same as this dragon charm and this 1909 struck cash.

A seasonal favorite, @Ryro!! Always a fun time. I haven't acquired any new ghoulies, so I'll post this one again -- a freaky-looking Pudicitia -- or perhaps she's just wearing a gas mask:

My cursed coin; it's an Antoninianus of Lucifer. This is the actual auction posting, please note the 666 Lot number. That's right 666. The coin is suppose to be a Barbarous Imitation of Tetricus I, but I swear its a portrait of Lucifer on the obverse, and him as a Satyr, including horns and goat legs, behanding a victim on the reverse.

Whoa, @Ed Snible, that headless horseman is effing dark! They would cut off the heads of people that committed suicide!?

Kinda makes the old story seem, Idk, cartoonish:

huh, come to think of it, ole Scipio Africanus (if that's who is really being depicted and not Mars) has the same long nose, big ears, and pencil neck as Icabod Crane:

I also really enjoyed the depictions of the reaper/death.

Thanks for sharing that link to the 10 Scariest bank notes. The #1 was a surprise. Silly looking and worthless. It's not meant to be spent... in this world:

chinese-hell-money-banknote-10000000.jpg.85bd798c3b6764cda45e4d140e0d5f41.jpg

"Living relatives offer Hell Money to the deceased by burning these banknotes, or by placing them in the coffin. The practice is common to the Ancient Greek ‘Charon’s obol’, a coin placed in or on the mouth of a dead person before burial. The ‘obol’ coin is meant to pay Charon, the ferryman of the Underworld.

A Chinese custom, hell money is offered to the dead, so they can bribe Yama, the King of Hell, for a shorter stay or to escape Hell altogether."

Thanks for sharing, Ed. Great, now I need banknotes!

Not an ancient, but a coin that really gives me the creeps. A 1793 Louis XVI 12 Deniers. He got guillotined on Jan 21st 1793, so either this coin must have been minted before 1793 or coins with his head still being minted long after it was removed from his body! Or it might have been minted during that 21-day window before his execution in 1793.

Epic coin! Satan is looking sharp as, well, Satan! And that "Satyr" clearly has the bent back legs. Very cool.

This falls under the, "I kid you not!",  catagory.

I bought the coin right before that for the ridiculous story of "Bonosos" and spooky fun artistry:

5898849_1722847184.l(1).jpg.3e831e295cd0b7e9befa8488a17741b5.jpg

Bonosus (Usurper) type. Æ Antoninianus (18mm, 3g). Mint in Britain or Gaul, c. 3rd century BC. Radiate head of emperor right, blundered legend around. R/ Sol (?) standing left holding whip and raising hand. RCV Vol. III, pg. 413 .

Bonosus more than likely never actually struck his own coinage. But it's a fun story.
